The Most Overlooked Wellness Practice Might Be Joy

When we talk about wellness, we usually talk about things like nutrition, exercise, sleep, supplements, and stress.

But there's something I think we sometimes leave off the list.

Joy.

Not manufactured positivity.

Not pretending everything is wonderful when it isn't.

Real joy.

Laughing until your stomach hurts.

Sitting outside on a beautiful morning.

Holding a grandchild in your arms.

Talking with someone you love.

Playing with your dog.

Listening and dancing to music.

Cooking something you enjoy.

Doing something that serves absolutely no purpose other than bringing a smile to your face.

Somehow, adulthood can convince us those things are extras.

But Scripture says:

"A cheerful heart is good medicine..."— Proverbs 17:22

I love that.

God knew long before the modern wellness conversation that joy matters.

And maybe we don't need to make joy another item on our wellness checklist.

Maybe we simply need to give ourselves permission to experience more of it.

Jesus said:

"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete."— John 15:11

There will always be responsibilities.

There will always be something that needs our attention.

And life will always include difficult seasons.

But there can still be laughter in the middle of an ordinary day.

There can still be beauty on a difficult day.

There can still be moments that make us stop and thank God simply because it's good to be alive.

Maybe joy isn't something we experience after everything is well.

Maybe joy is part of how God designed us to live well.

A Special Invitation

Do something this week simply because it brings you joy.

Not because it's productive.

Not because it's healthy.

Not because someone told you it should be part of your routine.

Just because it makes you smile.

And when it does, thank God for it.

Joy will always be a gift worth noticing.
