Your Morning Doesn't Have to Begin with the World

What is one of the first things you reach for in the morning?

For many of us, it’s our phone.

Before our feet even touch the floor, we can already be reading messages, checking email, scrolling social media, or catching up on what happened overnight.

And just like that, the world has our attention.

Someone needs something.

There’s another headline to read.

Another opinion to consider.

Another problem to think about.

All before we’ve even had our first cup of coffee.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how different our mornings might feel if we gave God our attention before giving it to the world.

Before You Hear From Everyone Else

Psalm 143:8 says:

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.”

What a beautiful way to begin the day.

Before hearing what everyone else has to say, remember what God has already said.

You are loved.

You are His.

You are not walking into this day alone.

You don’t have to know how everything is going to work out before the day begins.

Sometimes we need those truths before we need the news, the emails, or everyone else's opinions.

This Isn’t About a Perfect Morning Routine

I love a good morning routine, but I also know life doesn't always cooperate.

Some mornings begin earlier than expected.

Some are rushed.

Sometimes the dog needs you, the grandchildren are visiting, you have an early appointment, or you simply didn't sleep well.

This isn't about creating another list of things you have to accomplish before 8 a.m.

It's about where you anchor yourself before the day begins pulling at you.

Maybe it's reading one Scripture before checking your phone.

Maybe it's sitting quietly with your coffee and talking to God.

Maybe it's a few intentional breaths while thanking Him for another day.

Maybe it's praying before your feet even hit the floor.

Ten Minutes Can Change the Beginning of Your Day

We sometimes think meaningful change requires a big commitment.

But what if you simply gave yourself ten minutes?

Ten minutes without scrolling.

Ten minutes without the news.

Ten minutes without everyone else's voice.

Just a little space to breathe, pray, reflect, and remember Who is walking into the day with you.

The world will still be there when you're finished.

The messages can wait.

The headlines can wait.

But you may enter them differently when you've already grounded yourself in God's presence.

What Gets Your First Attention?

I think this is a question worth asking:

What gets the first part of me each morning?

My worries?

My phone?

My responsibilities?

Or God?

This isn't about guilt if you've been reaching for your phone first.

It's simply about noticing because what we allow into our minds first can influence what we carry into the rest of our day.

And sometimes the simplest shift is choosing to begin somewhere different.

Before I hear what the world has to say, I want to remember what God has already said.

Tomorrow morning, before you reach for your phone, give yourself a few quiet minutes with God.

You don't need an elaborate routine.

Start small.

Breathe.

Pray.

Read a Scripture.

Allow God to have your attention before the world begins asking for it.

If you'd like a little help getting started, I created Anchored in Peace: A Simple 10-Minute Morning Guide for Tranquility and Renewal for exactly this kind of morning.

It's a simple way to create a few intentional minutes with God and begin your day feeling a little more grounded, peaceful, and renewed.

Your morning doesn't have to begin with the world.

Maybe tomorrow, it can begin by becoming anchored in Him.
