You Were Never Meant to go at Full Speed

Somewhere along the way, being busy became normal.
We wake up already thinking about what needs to be done.
We move from one responsibility to the next.
We answer messages while doing something else.
We fill the quiet spaces.
And even when we finally sit down, our minds are often still running.
But when I look at the way God created the world, I notice something very different.
Nothing in creation operates at full speed all the time.
The sun rises and sets.
The tide comes in and goes out.
Fields produce and then rest.
Trees grow, release their leaves, become quiet, and begin again.
God built rhythm into creation.
Yet we often expect ourselves to keep going at the same pace every day.
God Created Rhythms. We Created Hurry.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us:
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
A time for everything.
Not everything at the same time.
I think that's an important distinction.
There are seasons when we have more energy and capacity.
There are seasons when our families require more of us.
There are seasons for building, serving, creating, and doing.
And there are seasons when our bodies need more rest, our minds need more quiet, and God may be inviting us to slow down enough to hear Him.
None of those seasons are wrong.
Your Pace Can Change
One of the things I've learned as I've gotten older is that the pace that worked for me in one season may not be the pace I need in another.
And that's okay.
Our bodies change.
Our responsibilities change.
Our priorities change.
Sometimes wisdom looks like recognizing those changes instead of fighting against them.
Slowing down doesn't mean you've stopped caring.
Leaving something for tomorrow doesn't mean you've failed.
Sometimes it's simply recognizing that you were never meant to do everything, for everyone, all at once.
Even Jesus Stepped Away
Jesus had people who needed Him.
Crowds followed Him.
There was always someone to heal, teach, comfort, or help.
And yet Scripture tells us:
“Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”— Luke 5:16
Often.
I love that word.
Jesus didn't wait until everything was finished before He stepped away.
He made room to withdraw, pray, and be with His Father.
If Jesus made room for that rhythm, perhaps we shouldn't feel guilty for needing it too.
Maybe the Goal Isn't to Fit More In
We're surrounded by ways to become more efficient.
How to get more done.
How to optimize our mornings.
How to squeeze more into the hours we have.
But maybe a better question is:
Does everything need to fit?
Sometimes it might mean creating enough space to actually experience the life God has already given us.
Time to pray without watching the clock.
Time to sit outside.
Time to enjoy a conversation.
Time to notice the people in front of us.
Time to simply be still.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Sometimes stillness helps us remember something hurry makes very easy to forget:
God is God. We are not.
We don't have to hold everything together.
This week, pay attention to your pace.
Not with judgment.
Just notice.
Where are you rushing when you don't need to?
Where have you filled every bit of available space?
Where might God be inviting you to slow down?
Maybe you don't need to completely rearrange your life.
Maybe you simply need to leave a little more room in it.
Because God created us with rhythms of movement and rest, work and stillness, giving and receiving.
He did this because He knew you were never meant to go at full speed all the time.
