Your Body isn't an Idol; It's a Gift

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to swing from one extreme to the other?

Some people rarely think about their health at all. They push through exhaustion, skip meals, neglect rest, and convince themselves they'll take care of their bodies "someday."

Others spend nearly every waking moment consumed by health.

Every meal is analyzed.

Every symptom becomes a source of worry. Every new wellness trend promises to be the answer.

I've come to believe that neither extreme reflects God's heart for us.

Our bodies were never meant to be ignored.

But they were never meant to become idols either.

They are gifts.

When I read Scripture, I don't see a God who calls us to obsess over our bodies. I see a loving Father who entrusts them to our care.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, Paul reminds us:

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

Notice what Paul doesn't say.

He doesn't tell us to worship our bodies.

He doesn't tell us to measure our worth by the number on the scale.

Instead, he calls us to honor God with our bodies.

That one word, honor, has changed the way I think about wellness.

When we understand that our bodies are gifts entrusted to us by God, caring for them no longer feels vain or selfish.

It becomes an act of gratitude.

It becomes an act of stewardship.

That doesn't mean we'll always make perfect choices.

It doesn't mean we'll never enjoy dessert, miss a workout, or have seasons where life feels overwhelming.

It simply means our motivation changes.

We aren't pursuing health because we're chasing perfection.

We're pursuing health because we're grateful.

Grateful for lungs that allow us to breathe deeply.

Grateful for legs that carry us through the day.

Grateful for eyes that see a beautiful sunrise.

Grateful for hearts that continue beating, often without us giving them a second thought.

Every healthy choice becomes a quiet "thank You" to the One who created us.

I think that's why I've become so passionate about teaching Biblical wellness.

Not because I believe health is the ultimate goal.

Jesus is.

Health simply allows us to serve Him with greater strength, energy, and joy.

It helps us love our families well.

It allows us to be present with our grandchildren.

It gives us the energy to fulfill the purpose God has placed on our lives.

That's very different from making wellness an idol.

The world often tells us that our value comes from how we look.

God tells us our value comes from whose we are.

The world says to chase the perfect body.

God invites us to faithfully steward the body He's already given us.

If you've ever felt guilty for caring about your health because you didn't want it to become an idol, I hope this encourages you.

God isn't asking you to worship your body.

He's inviting you to care for it with gratitude.

To nourish it.

To move it.

To let it rest.

To strengthen it.

To honor it not because it defines your worth, but because it is a gift from the One who does.

Perhaps today is the perfect day to stop striving for perfection and simply begin thanking God for the incredible body He entrusted to you.

Because your body isn't an idol.

It's a gift.

And every gift deserves to be cared for with gratitude.

If you're tired of the confusion surrounding health and you're ready to discover what Scripture says about caring for your body, I'd love to walk that journey with you. Together, we'll return to the rhythms God designed; not in pursuit of perfection, but in faithful stewardship of the incredible gift He has entrusted to us.
